NEW YORK — The 2025 NBA draft kicked off with a shocker as the Utah Jazz decided to draft Ace Bailey, the Rutgers forward known for his immense talent and enigmatic presence in this year’s pool of prospects.
After securing Bailey with the fifth overall pick, Austin Ainge, the president of basketball operations for the Jazz, shared with ESPN, “We are genuinely excited about him as a player and believe he fits well within our program.”
Interestingly, Bailey himself was taken aback by the Jazz’s interest, stating he had “no idea” they were considering him. Reports indicated that Utah wasn’t among his top choices, as noted by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony leading up to the draft.
Despite the surprise, Bailey expressed optimism about blending in with his new teammates. “I know it’s going to involve a lot of work when I arrive. I’m someone who enjoys training hard and I intend to motivate my teammates to reach their fullest potential. I want to step in and take on a leadership role, even as a rookie,” he stated.
The Jazz also made headlines by acquiring Florida standout Walter Clayton Jr., who was initially picked by the Washington Wizards at No. 18 before being traded to Utah in exchange for their 21st and 43rd picks, along with future second-round selections.
Bailey’s draft strategy had sparked considerable speculation. Once projected as a top-three pick, he entered the draft ranked third on ESPN’s Top 100 list. However, he was unique in that he had not conducted any pre-draft workouts with NBA teams, leading to assumptions that he preferred a destination outside the top five. Consequently, he began to slip down the draft boards, with ESPN’s latest mock draft suggesting he would go to the Wizards at No. 6.
The debate surrounding Bailey’s potential has been intense throughout the season. Standing at 6-foot-9 with impressive shooting skills, he has the physical attributes to be a significant wing player—a highly sought-after role in the NBA. Nevertheless, his efficiency has been questioned, and he has considerable room for growth in areas such as ball handling and passing.
For Bailey, the Wizards could have been an ideal fit, especially considering their need for a cornerstone player as they rebuild. However, the Jazz, despite finishing last season with a dismal 17-65 record, were not dissuaded from selecting Bailey, even without the opportunity to evaluate him in a workout.
With a roster that allows for Bailey’s development and under the guidance of one of the league’s top coaches, Will Hardy, who recently secured a long-term deal with the team, the stage is set for Bailey to make an impact.
“I’m thrilled the draft process is over,” Bailey remarked. “I’m eager to hit the court. It’s been an incredible journey filled with hard work and preparation for the next level.”
Bailey’s selection by the Jazz underscores the unpredictable nature of the NBA draft, especially for prospects deemed high-risk, high-reward. As franchises continue to adapt to evolving player dynamics, Bailey’s journey could highlight a trend towards valuing potential over immediate readiness.
