Nicolas Batum, the forward for the LA Clippers, has decided to forgo his $4.9 million player option for the 2025-26 season, opting to enter free agency, as reported by sources to ESPN on Saturday.
There is a strong mutual interest in a new contract between Batum and the Clippers. The team has the flexibility to initiate his next contract at $5.6 million, which is 120% of his previous salary for the 2024-25 season, or they can utilize part of their $14.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception, according to ESPN analyst Bobby Marks.
As Batum approaches his 18th season in the NBA, he has hinted that this might be his final year, stating there’s a “very, very good chance” of it being his last. The 36-year-old French player averaged under 18 minutes per game last season, participating in 78 games with eight starts. Standing at 6-foot-10, he is known for his solid defensive skills and ability to stretch the floor with his quick-release three-point shooting.
During the Clippers’ first-round playoff defeat against the Denver Nuggets, Batum’s versatility was evident, as he averaged nearly 40% shooting from beyond the arc on 4.7 attempts per game, contributing 1.7 blocks and 0.9 steals.
Lawrence Frank, the Clippers’ president of basketball operations, expressed a strong desire for Batum to return, stating the team is “1,000 percent” hoping to have him back for the 2025-26 season.
Batum has enjoyed five successful seasons with the Clippers, following significant tenures with the Portland Trail Blazers and Charlotte Hornets. Notably, he is a two-time Olympic silver medalist with the French national team.
Batum’s decision to opt-out signals his desire for a fresh start or a better contract. With the Clippers keen on retaining him, this move could reshape their roster dynamics and impact their strategies for the upcoming season. As the NBA evolves, veteran players like Batum often play crucial roles in both leadership and on-court performance.
