The federal district attorney’s office has launched an investigation into Malik Beasley, the Detroit Pistons guard, over allegations of gambling connected to NBA games and prop bets, sources informed ESPN on Sunday.
These claims date back to the 2023-24 season, during which Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks. Throughout that season, he played in 79 games, averaging 11.3 points and achieving a personal record of 77 starts.
A notable U.S. sportsbook reported an unusual spike in betting activity on Beasley’s performance statistics beginning in January 2024, as disclosed by a gambling industry insider to ESPN’s David Purdum.
“An investigation is not a charge,” stated Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, to ESPN. “Malik is entitled to the presumption of innocence guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Currently, he has not faced any charges.”
Beasley, 28, was in discussions regarding a new three-year contract worth $42 million to return to Detroit, but those talks have now been paused, according to sources.
The Pistons confirmed their awareness of the ongoing investigation and are referring further inquiries to the NBA. NBA spokesman Mike Bass stated, “We are fully cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ inquiry.”
Having played all 82 games in his first season with the Pistons, Beasley averaged 16.3 points. In contrast, previous cases in the league have seen serious consequences; for instance, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned after an investigation revealed he shared confidential information with bettors and placed wagers on games.
Beasley has a history of legal troubles as well; in 2020, while with the Minnesota Timberwolves, he pleaded guilty to a felony related to threats of violence, resulting in a 120-day jail sentence, which he completed after the 2020-21 season. Additionally, he received a 12-game suspension from the NBA in 2021 due to this guilty plea.
This investigation into Malik Beasley highlights ongoing concerns about gambling within professional sports. As the NBA continues to grapple with these issues, it raises questions about the integrity of the game and the potential fallout for players involved in such activities.
