According to sources, the Chicago Bulls have finalized a trade sending Lonzo Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers in return for Isaac Okoro.
Lonzo Ball, now 27, had a challenging season, averaging 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He faced significant health issues, undergoing a meniscus and cartilage transplant on his left knee in March 2023 after previous treatments were ineffective. Following that, he dealt with a right wrist sprain, managing to participate in only 35 games this season after being sidelined for two prior seasons.
For the Cavaliers, acquiring Ball means adding a dynamic, defensive point guard who stands 6-foot-6, especially as they prepare for the departure of Ty Jerome in free agency.
The Cavaliers are navigating a tight financial situation, entering the 2025-26 season roughly $12 million over the salary cap’s second apron. With All-Star Evan Mobley set to receive a $45 million bonus, Ball’s contract, which spans two years for $20 million with a team option for 2026-27, becomes a strategic fit.
Cavaliers president Koby Altman has had his eye on Ball for months, having initiated discussions at the February trade deadline before sealing the agreement this past Saturday.
In further developments, free agent Sam Merrill is expected to sign a four-year, $38 million deal to remain with the Cavaliers. Meanwhile, All-Star guard Darius Garland recently underwent surgery for a left big toe injury that hindered his performance during the playoffs. He is projected to be out for four to five months, with hopes of a full recovery in time for the training camp in October. However, it is likely he will miss the start of the regular season.
This trade reflects a strategic shift for both teams, with the Bulls seeking to enhance their roster with Okoro’s defensive capabilities while the Cavaliers look to bolster their backcourt amid injury concerns. The financial implications of Ball’s contract may also indicate a broader strategy to manage future cap space.
