Chelsea has officially struck a deal potentially worth up to €65 million (approximately $76.1 million) to acquire Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, as reported by sources to ESPN.
Earlier this week, discussions took place between the two clubs during the Club World Cup in the United States, where both teams were present. Those talks have advanced significantly in recent days.
The 20-year-old winger has successfully negotiated a seven-year contract and is poised to undergo a medical examination within the next 48 hours.
While FIFA allows clubs to add two players to their rosters for the Club World Cup, Gittens will be unable to participate due to being cup-tied after making a substitute appearance against Fluminense during the group stage.
Previously, Chelsea had two offers turned down before the tournament commenced, with their highest bid of €50 million including add-ons falling short of Dortmund’s expectations.
With Gittens joining the ranks, Chelsea bolsters its roster alongside a growing number of former Manchester City players at Stamford Bridge, which now includes Liam Delap, who was transferred from Ipswich Town for £30 million. Both Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo also have ties to City’s past.
Even with the acquisition of Gittens, Chelsea is not done. The club is actively seeking to enhance its attacking lineup and is in pursuit of Brighton’s João Pedro, with Newcastle also vying for the player.
This signing reflects Chelsea’s strategic efforts to rejuvenate their squad with young talent, especially those with potential from Manchester City. The competition for players in the Premier League is intensifying, and Chelsea’s moves may set the stage for a new era of attacking football.
