PHILADELPHIA — Enzo Maresca has made it clear to Chelsea’s Pedro Neto that the choice to participate in the Club World Cup quarterfinal against Palmeiras on Friday lies entirely with him. This comes in the wake of the heartbreaking news about the passing of his dear friend and fellow Portugal national team member, Diogo Jota.
Diogo Jota, just 28 years old, tragically died alongside his brother André Silva in a car accident in northern Spain on Wednesday evening. The two shared a bond, having played together at Wolves before Jota’s transfer to Liverpool in 2020. Just last month, they celebrated victory together as they clinched the UEFA Nations League title with the Portuguese team.
Neto was absent from Chelsea’s training session in Miami on Thursday after receiving the devastating news. Coach Maresca emphasized that there is no pressure on Neto to take the field against Palmeiras, prioritizing his emotional state instead.
“Pedro is very sad, probably beyond sadness,” Maresca shared with the media. “We are here to support him through this tough time. Ultimately, it’s Pedro’s choice [if he wants to play]. I spoke with him this morning, and we’re behind him whatever he decides. We will stand by him regardless of whether he steps onto the pitch tomorrow or not.”
Maresca expressed his struggle to articulate the emotions surrounding such a tragic event, admitting to feelings of helplessness. He extended his love and condolences to Jota’s family during this immense tragedy.
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella also voiced support for Neto, noting the team’s unity during this challenging time. “This morning, he was visibly upset, and it wasn’t the best moment for him,” Cucurella explained. “We’ve tried to stick together, and by the afternoon, he seemed a bit more at ease. I told him that if he plays, he is destined to score, and we hope to honor Jota’s memory through our performance. Football takes a backseat in moments like these; what truly matters is showing respect and love.”
