If you thought the formidable Los Angeles Dodgers would be the first MLB team to notch 50 wins this season, you weren’t alone—but you were mistaken. The Detroit Tigers pulled off this feat a full day ahead of the Dodgers. Kudos if you had faith in the Tigers! While skepticism remains, their success is undeniably impressive, thanks to stellar performances from ace Tarik Skubal, the scorching Riley Greene, and the revitalized Javier Baez, among others.
But the question lingers: Are the Tigers truly as formidable as their record suggests? Could they be the best team in the American League? And how would they fare against the Dodgers or any team from a competitive National League in the World Series?
To gain insight, we spoke with MLB experts Bradford Doolittle, Tim Keown, Jeff Passan, and David Schoenfield as the Tigers prepare to face the Minnesota Twins on “Sunday Night Baseball” (7 p.m. ET, ESPN and ESPN2).
Identifying the biggest threat to the Tigers in the AL, Doolittle noted that the Yankees still boast the strongest roster, making them frontrunners, despite the Rays and Astros closing in. He anticipates a tightly contested October with no clear leader in the AL. Keown echoed this sentiment, highlighting the depth and resilience of the Yankees and Rays.
On the National League side, Doolittle pointed to the Dodgers as the team to beat, citing their potential despite early-season struggles due to injuries. Keown reiterated that the Dodgers are a significant threat in any matchup, expecting them to prevail in a hypothetical seven-game series.
As for the Tigers’ best pitcher, experts leaned towards Skubal, who has shown remarkable consistency this season. However, concerns about their infield and bullpen were raised. Passan emphasized the struggles of the left side of the infield, while Schoenfield questioned the reliability of the bullpen in high-pressure situations.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Tigers must contemplate strategic moves. Doolittle suggested bolstering their pitching staff, while Keown and Passan recommended enhancing their offense, particularly at third base.
The Tigers’ early success has sparked conversations about their playoff potential. As they navigate the season, their ability to strengthen weaknesses and adapt to challenges will be crucial in determining whether they can maintain their momentum and contend for the championship.
