In a thrilling finish, José Morales scored the decisive penalty in the seventh round, sending Guatemala past Canada into the semifinals of the Concacaf Gold Cup on Sunday in Minneapolis.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw after regular time, leading to a nail-biting shootout where both teams exchanged blows for the first four rounds. However, the fifth round saw a twist when Guatemala’s goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro thwarted Cyle Larin’s shot, while José Pinto’s attempt sailed high over the bar.
As the shootout progressed, Canada’s Luc De Fougerolles struck the post, leaving the door open for Morales. He capitalized on the opportunity, firing a shot straight down the center while goalie Dayne St. Clair dove too far to his left, sealing a 6-5 victory for Guatemala.
This win marks Guatemala’s first semifinal appearance in the Gold Cup since 1996, a significant achievement for the team. Their path to victory wasn’t without challenges, as Canada played the latter part of the match with just ten players after Jacob Shaffelburg received a red card for a foul on Stheven Robles just before halftime.
Guatemala’s equalizer came from former U.S. player Rubio Rubín in the 69th minute. They are set to face the United States in the semifinals after the Americans triumphed over Costa Rica on the same day. Earlier, Jonathan David had put Canada ahead with a penalty kick in the 30th minute, but this loss means they will miss the semifinals for the second consecutive Gold Cup.
