Inter Milan secured a place in the knockout stage of the Club World Cup by defeating River Plate 2-0 on Wednesday. The victory ensured their advancement as Group E winners, sending the Argentine team packing.
Francesco Esposito netted the first goal for Inter just seven minutes after River was left with ten players due to Lucas Martínez Quarta’s red card. Alessandro Bastoni sealed the win with a goal in stoppage time.
At just 19 years old, Esposito scored in his second match for Inter, having previously impressed with 17 goals during a loan spell at Spezia in Serie B. Bastoni’s late strike confirmed Inter’s top position in the group, finishing with seven points.
The 20-time Italian champions are set to face Fluminese next, one of four Brazilian teams advancing to the round of 16, in Charlotte on Monday. Monterrey, who triumphed over Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0, secured second place, edging out River by a point.
Martinez Quarta received a red card for a last-man challenge on Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while his teammate Gonzalo Montiel also saw red after receiving two yellow cards during a chaotic stoppage time.
Julien Laurens commented on River Plate’s elimination from the FIFA Club World Cup, describing it as a “huge failure” for the club.
Esposito’s first goal was set up by Petar Sucic, who made a decisive run and delivered a precise pass into the box. The young forward skillfully maneuvered past two defenders before slotting the ball low past goalkeeper Franco Armani.
Before these goals, Inter had been applying pressure, with Lautaro Martínez missing two significant opportunities. In the 51st minute, he hit the left post after a low strike from the edge of the penalty area. Just four minutes later, he had another chance but fired straight at Armani.
Despite a slow start with few clear cut chances in the first half, River managed only one shot on target, a long-range effort from Franco Mastantuono that was easily handled by Sommer. Esposito had another close call in the 26th minute but his attempt was blocked after a cross from Nicolò Barella.
The match highlighted Inter’s resilience and ability to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes, while River’s early red card proved detrimental. This result underlines the competitive nature of the Club World Cup and the high stakes for teams involved.
