Lille OSC is actively pursuing a deal to acquire Olivier Giroud, the seasoned French striker currently with LAFC, as confirmed by a reliable source for ESPN.
At 38 years old, Giroud joined LAFC just a year ago after leaving AC Milan, but his time in MLS has not been as impactful as anticipated. Despite being the all-time leading scorer for France with an impressive tally of 57 goals, he has only managed to score three times in 20 appearances in the league. Remarkably, he had to wait until his 16th game to find the back of the net.
Giroud’s contract with LAFC runs until the conclusion of the 2025 season, with an option for an additional year. The news about Lille’s interest was initially reported by L’Equipe. A move back to Ligue 1 would mark Giroud’s return to France since his transfer from Montpellier to Arsenal in 2012. However, matching his current guaranteed salary of $3.68 million as a designated player could pose a challenge for Lille.
Last season, Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1, securing their spot in the upcoming Europa League. Giroud, who was part of the French squad that claimed the World Cup in 2018, has also enjoyed a successful stint at Chelsea, where he lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2021.
