DALLAS — In a stunning turn of events, the Mavericks seized the opportunity to select forward Cooper Flagg as the top pick in the 2025 NBA draft on Wednesday night.
“I feel incredible. This truly feels like a dream come true,” Flagg expressed, beaming alongside his family. “I wouldn’t want to share this moment with anyone else.”
In a remarkable twist, Dallas won the draft lottery with just a 1.8% chance, positioning the team to choose Flagg, a player widely recognized as the draft’s premier talent following his decision to graduate high school a year early for college.
“He’s a generational talent—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison remarked. “We are thrilled from top to bottom about this pick.”
Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 221 pounds, Flagg will not turn 19 until December 21. He entered Duke amidst high expectations and did not disappoint, earning a consensus All-American title and numerous accolades, including the Wooden and Naismith Awards. His stellar performance included averaging 19.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals, propelling the Blue Devils to a 35-4 record and a Final Four appearance.
“What stands out about him is his ability to play both ends of the court,” Harrison noted. “He plays with intensity, and when you have someone with such talent and exceptional character, it’s a game-changer for your team culture.”
Flagg’s arrival in Dallas comes just months after the controversial trade of five-time All-NBA player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, a move that left fans outraged and raised concerns about the franchise’s future. However, Flagg’s addition is expected to help restore confidence and excitement among the Mavericks’ supporters.
Joining a team eager to bounce back from a challenging 39-43 season, Flagg is anticipated to play a significant role in the frontcourt alongside 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis and other talented players like Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, Naji Marshall, and Caleb Martin.
“I’m thrilled about this opportunity. I can’t wait to soak up knowledge and learn from Hall of Fame-caliber players,” Flagg stated. “This is going to be an amazing experience, and I feel truly blessed to be here.”
Despite the pressure from fans calling for his dismissal, Harrison believes Flagg will not only contribute to immediate success but also evolve into a cornerstone for the franchise. “It’s about winning now, but we’re also building for the future,” he said. “Cooper will help us win right away but will also set the stage for long-term success. Even though he’s only just finishing high school, he will be a vital part of our plans moving forward.”
