Inter Miami’s star player, Lionel Messi, expressed that his team had “presented a strong image” at the Club World Cup, even after suffering a 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, leading to their exit from the tournament.
“The match unfolded as we anticipated,” Messi noted post-game. “They are a formidable team, clearly the champions of the previous Champions League. It was a challenging game, and we aimed to perform at our best, which we did at the Club World Cup level.”
The team secured second place in the group stage, achieving two draws and a 2-1 win over FC Porto, narrowly missing out on the top position. The Herons had a strong showing against Palmeiras, initially leading 2-0 before conceding two late goals that resulted in a draw.
A win against Palmeiras would have meant that Inter Miami faced Botafogo in the knockout stage rather than PSG, a scenario Messi suggested would have been a simpler test. “We feel a bit of frustration against Palmeiras for not sealing the victory, which would have changed our path against PSG, a tougher opponent,” remarked the World Cup champion from Argentina. “However, it’s not a disappointment; it’s just how things turned out. The draw left a bitter taste, but we competed well overall. Now, we must look ahead.”
Defender Jordi Alba echoed Messi’s thoughts, stating that the team met the expectations they set before the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup. “We faced three strong opponents in our group, and honestly, we performed better than them,” Alba commented after the match. “Today, we confronted a truly great rival, who really challenged us, but it’s something to take pride in.”
He further highlighted the tournament as a valuable learning experience for the younger players, especially those without prior European exposure. For former Inter Miami academy talents like Benjamin Cremaschi and Noah Allen, this marked their first encounter with a club team outside of the Concacaf region in a competitive arena.
With Messi’s arrival, as well as that of Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets, the team is focused on nurturing the younger generation. “We’ve been better than our three group opponents, and everyone needs to recognize that they can also push forward and improve,” Alba emphasized.
Head coach Javier Mascherano noted that competing on an international level will benefit the club as they transition back to Major League Soccer. “There are crucial lessons to glean from this experience. We’ll reflect on it, and it will certainly aid us in our national league endeavors,” Mascherano stated. “It’s essential that we utilize this experience wisely as a team going forward.”
Inter Miami is set to return to play on July 5 against CF Montreal in MLS, while also gearing up for the 2025 Leagues Cup starting on July 30.
