Monterrey secured their place in the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with an impressive 4-0 victory against Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday. This win not only earned them second place in Group E but also set up a showdown with Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.
The match turned decisively in Monterrey’s favor with three goals in just eight minutes during the first half. Nelson Deossa opened the scoring with a stunning long-range shot, followed by a composed finish from German Berterame, and then Jesús Corona capped off the spree with a spectacular strike from distance.
Deossa’s opener came at the 30-minute mark, a swirling shot from 35 yards that caught Urawa’s goalkeeper, Shusaku Nishikawa, off guard. Just four minutes later, Berterame doubled the lead with a precise low shot into the bottom corner after a clever pass from José Alvarado. Corona then made it three in the 38th minute, unleashing a powerful shot from 30 yards that left Nishikawa helpless.
Although Urawa, who had already faced elimination after losing their first two matches, nearly took the lead early on, Monterrey’s defense held firm. Nishikawa did his best to keep the scoreline from ballooning further, saving attempts from Ricardo Chavez and Berterame. However, in stoppage time, Berterame struck again, sealing a dominant win for Monterrey.
“I’m thrilled we’ve made it to the next stage,” said Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent. “This weekend marks our club’s 80th anniversary, making this moment even more special. We’re delighted with a clean sheet, which is no easy feat in this challenging group.”
Monterrey’s convincing win highlights their potential as strong contenders in the Club World Cup. Their ability to deliver under pressure, combined with standout performances from key players, sets a promising tone as they prepare to face Borussia Dortmund next week.
