ATLANTA — As the final whistle blew at the Club World Cup, Thomas Müller took a moment to wave goodbye to the Bayern Munich supporters, marking the end of an era.
After a remarkable 25 years with the German giants, the 35-year-old exited the stage following a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals on Saturday. This loss casts a bittersweet shadow over a career brimming with achievements.
Müller, who came on as a substitute in the 80th minute, nearly earned a penalty in the dying moments of stoppage time when he was challenged high by PSG’s Nuno Mendes. However, a video review revealed that Mendes had struck the ball, narrowly avoiding a collision with Müller, thus sealing PSG’s victory.
“I’m still fully in work mode now,” he stated. “It doesn’t feel too different from before the game when we aimed to push through to the next round.”
Not yet ready to ponder his illustrious career at Bayern, which began when he joined as a 10-year-old in 2000, Müller remarked, “In the end, perhaps we deserved more. But football can be a gamble in tight matches, and yes, we lost this one.”
With over 200 goals and assists, Müller holds the record for the most appearances in Bayern’s history, having led the team to an incredible 13 Bundesliga titles, including one last triumph this season. However, Bayern announced in April that they would not renew his significant contract for another year.
“Of course, I’m aware this was my last game, and I will reflect on my next steps in the following days,” Müller shared, but he has kept his future plans under wraps, even as rumors swirl about a potential move to Major League Soccer in the U.S.
“Right now, I’m not inclined to dive into my deeper thoughts about my career,” he added. “We faced a significant challenge and lost an important match for us.”
