Lando Norris celebrated a vital triumph at the Austrian Grand Prix, successfully fending off teammate and title contender Oscar Piastri in an exhilarating battle on the track. Norris skillfully maintained his lead over Piastri during a gripping 20-lap encounter in the race’s early stages, managing to withstand late pressure to secure his third victory of the season.
This win comes just two weeks after a collision with Piastri at the Canadian Grand Prix, narrowing the Australian’s championship lead from 22 to 15 points.
“Fantastic job, everyone! What a beautiful one-two finish,” Norris exclaimed over the radio after crossing the finish line, adding during his post-race interview, “We had an incredible battle, no doubt about it. It was a lot of fun but also quite stressful! A thrilling contest.”
He complimented Piastri, saying, “I hope it was enjoyable for the fans to watch. It was challenging, especially with him using DRS.”
Defending champion Max Verstappen’s already fragile title chances took a significant hit when he was forced off the track by Kimi Antonelli on the very first lap. Throughout the weekend, McLaren showcased their superiority, with Norris and Piastri quickly distancing themselves from the Ferrari drivers right from the start.
Despite a brief moment where Piastri surged ahead at Turn 3, Norris swiftly reclaimed the inside line, powering past at the next corner. Championship leader Piastri nearly collided with Norris on lap 20 while attempting to overtake, but a timely pit stop allowed Norris to regain some breathing space.
Piastri admitted, “Apologies for my move in Turn 4; that was my fault.”
Following the race, the standings suggest a tightening competition for the championship, solidifying 2025 as a potential two-horse race, especially with Verstappen’s absence from the finish line and Montreal winner George Russell trailing in fifth place. Charles Leclerc secured a podium finish for Ferrari, but he was significantly behind in third, followed by Lewis Hamilton in fourth.
Liam Lawson, who was replaced as Verstappen’s teammate after just two races this season, impressively took sixth for Racing Bulls with an excellent one-stop strategy. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso claimed eighth for Aston Martin, defending against his protégé Gabriel Bortoleto, who earned his first points of the season by finishing ninth. Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg made a notable contribution to the team’s success by finishing tenth, marking the first time Sauber had both cars in the top-10 since 2018. Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten for Haas.
On a dismal note for Williams, Carlos Sainz was unable to start due to a brake fire during the formation lap, which caused a 15-minute delay. His teammate Alex Albon later retired in the pit lane.
