Sporting CP’s president, Frederico Varandas, has openly acknowledged that it’s highly probable Viktor Gyökeres will part ways with the team this summer.
Varandas stated that only the “most incompetent agent in the world” could derail the Sweden international’s exit, but he remains optimistic about Sporting’s price expectations. He referenced summer transfers of Matheus Cunha and Martín Zubimendi as benchmarks that clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal need to meet to capture Gyökeres.
ESPN has previously reported interest from both United and Arsenal in Gyökeres, who had an impressive season with 54 goals in 52 matches across all competitions.
“If you ask me today, there’s a strong likelihood Viktor will depart,” Varandas shared with Portuguese media outlet A Bola. “Recently, we’ve been monitoring the market, and I noted that a player like Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, transferred to Arsenal for €65 million ($76 million).
“I observed two forwards sold in the Premier League—Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo—who, in my view, don’t match Viktor’s caliber. They moved for around €75 million. We’re discussing players who are 26 years old.”
“Thus, considering our valuation of Viktor, I genuinely believe he could leave unless he possesses the worst agent imaginable, which seems unlikely since he’s among the top footballers globally.”
Gyökeres is contracted with Sporting until June 2028, with a release clause set at €100 million.
This situation underscores the delicate balance clubs must maintain between player valuation and market dynamics. As transfer windows heat up, the demand for prolific scorers like Gyökeres could shift negotiations, making this an intriguing saga to watch.
