In a move that has fans buzzing, the Seattle Seahawks are set to welcome back veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who is reportedly signing a one-year contract worth $3 million, potentially reaching $4 million with incentives, as disclosed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
At 29 years old, Griffin brings valuable experience to a relatively young cornerback lineup. He is expected to vie for the No. 3 cornerback spot, competing with Josh Jobe, while Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen hold the starting positions.
Having started his career in Seattle, Griffin is returning to the franchise where he enjoyed his finest performances. As a third-round draft choice in 2017, he logged 53 starts over his first four seasons, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2019. After his initial tenure, Griffin signed a lucrative three-year, $40 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars but was released in 2023 following a stint marred by injuries.
The Seahawks had identified cornerback as their most pressing need post-draft, yet they did not select one from their 11 picks, a decision influenced by the draft board’s dynamics, according to general manager John Schneider. Following an April visit, discussions for Griffin’s return gained momentum after the draft.
In his eight-season NFL career, Griffin has suited up for 106 games, accumulating nine interceptions and 70 passes defended. His most recent season with the Minnesota Vikings saw him play all 17 games, recording two interceptions, one of which was pivotal in a December victory against the Arizona Cardinals.
This reunion not only fills a critical gap in Seattle’s defense but also highlights the team’s strategy of bolstering experience. Griffin’s return could signal a pivotal season ahead as the Seahawks aim to reclaim their place among the league’s top teams.
