Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic has decided to hold off on contract extension discussions this summer, with plans to revisit the matter next year, as confirmed by a league source to ESPN on Tuesday.
Jokic, who has three years left on a lucrative five-year, $276 million contract signed in the summer of 2022, holds a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.
He is eligible to negotiate a three-year, $200 million extension until October 20, which would replace his current player option for the final year.
By postponing negotiations until the 2026 offseason, Jokic stands to gain an additional year and $77 million on his contract, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Josh Kroenke, the Nuggets’ president, indicated that the team will propose an extension to their star this summer, but they also recognize the financial advantages for Jokic to sign at a later date.
