In a move that has the basketball community buzzing, free agent Jaxson Hayes has reportedly reached an agreement to rejoin the Los Angeles Lakers on a one-year contract, as confirmed by sources to ESPN.
On Thursday, Hayes’ representatives, Bill Duffy and Marlon Harrison from WME Basketball, sealed the deal with Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations and general manager. This announcement follows closely after the franchise secured a two-year agreement with Deandre Ayton, another center in free agency.
Last season, Hayes stepped up as the Lakers’ starting center, achieving a career-best shooting accuracy of 72.2% from the field. He was also recognized for his impressive defensive skills, ranking in the top 10 for field goal percentage allowed while contesting shots, particularly on layups and dunks, among players who contested 250 or more attempts, according to ESPN Research. Over 56 games, he averaged 6.8 points and 4.8 rebounds.
During the playoffs, Hayes started the first four games of the Lakers’ series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but his playing time was limited, as he never exceeded 10 minutes in any game and was sidelined for Game 5. With Ayton on board, Hayes will now serve as a backup, potentially strengthening the Lakers’ frontcourt depth.
Hayes’ return indicates the Lakers’ strategy to bolster their roster with familiar faces while integrating new talent. As the team gears up for the upcoming season, the combination of Hayes and Ayton could play a pivotal role in elevating their performance and competitiveness.
