Fred VanVleet, the guard for the Houston Rockets, is gearing up to finalize a two-year, $50 million deal to remain with the team, as reported by sources to ESPN. This contract includes a player option for the 2026-27 season.
In a strategic decision, the Rockets are opting out of VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option for the upcoming season. Instead, they are working closely with VanVleet’s agent, Rich Paul, who is the CEO of Klutch Sports, to secure this new agreement. This deal not only provides the Rockets with flexibility in the short term but also positions VanVleet to enter the free agency market in 2026 when teams may have more salary cap space. Sources indicate that both parties are optimistic about a long-term partnership beyond these two years.
At 31, VanVleet rejoins a Rockets lineup that has been significantly enhanced following the high-profile acquisition of 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant. The offseason has been particularly active for the Rockets, who have also confirmed a three-year, $39 million extension for center Steven Adams and secured a long-term deal with coach Ime Udoka.
VanVleet, who once earned All-Star honors and was part of the 2019 NBA Championship team with the Toronto Raptors, has been pivotal in transforming the Rockets into playoff contenders over his two seasons in Houston. After signing a three-year contract with the team in the summer of 2023, he played a crucial role in the Rockets’ rise from 22 wins to 41 in his first year. This past season, they achieved an impressive 52 wins, earning the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and breaking a four-year postseason drought.
In the 2024-25 season, he averaged 14.1 points, the lowest since 2018-19, yet shone during the playoffs with an average of 18.7 points per game. Although the Rockets fell to the Golden State Warriors in the first round after a seven-game series, VanVleet’s performance stood out as he averaged 24.3 points on 56% shooting in the final four games.
Known for his tough defense, VanVleet excels in offense through playmaking and a strong three-point game, ranking second on the team in 3-point attempts per game last season at 7.7. However, he has faced challenges with shooting efficiency, having shot under 40% from the field during the 2024-25 season for the fourth time in his career. Over his nine years in the league, he has maintained an average of 14.9 points and 5.7 assists per game.
VanVleet’s decision to sign with the Rockets indicates a commitment to the team’s future, especially with the recent roster enhancements. As they continue to build around their core players, this partnership may redefine their place in the competitive landscape of the NBA.
