Xabi Alonso has made a call to action for Real Madrid’s stars, including Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé, to elevate their work-rate when they are not in possession. This comes as the team gears up for their crucial final group match in the Club World Cup against Salzburg.
Currently, Madrid holds four points from their two matches, having drawn 1-1 with Al Hilal and secured a 3-1 victory over Pachuca. This puts them in a favorable position to reach the knockout stage ahead of their Thursday showdown with Salzburg at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Alonso noted that both Vinícius and Mbappé faced scrutiny last season regarding their defensive contributions under former manager Carlo Ancelotti. In a news conference on Wednesday, he emphasized, “All 11 players on the pitch need to be involved in defending. We must work together on our pressing strategy—Vini, Jude [Bellingham], Fede [Valverde], and Kylian must all contribute. The defense needs to advance as a unit; the closer we are in spacing, the more effective we will be. Improvement in this area is essential, and Vini is working hard on it.”
He also highlighted the exciting competition level in the tournament, noting how South American teams have performed admirably against their European counterparts. “It’s beneficial for European football to witness such competition from outside our region. Teams we don’t often see are showcasing their quality. River Plate will be up against Inter soon, and the Brazilian teams are also impressive. Initially, all eyes were on the European teams, but this diversity is great for the sport as a whole,” Alonso added.
Should Real Madrid top Group H, they might encounter Manchester City in the knockout round, a rematch of last season’s Champions League. However, Alonso dismissed the notion of focusing on that potential matchup against Salzburg. “It’s not wise to approach this match with anything less than a winning mindset. Setting unclear objectives sends the wrong message. While I acknowledge the draw, our goal is to win, period.”
On the topic of Rodrygo, who did not play against Pachuca, rumors about his future have surfaced. Alonso, however, expressed satisfaction with the Brazilian’s attitude. “He seems good and full of energy. The decision for him not to play was tactical, but he remains a key player. I anticipate he will have a significant role in the Club World Cup.”
