In a surprising twist during the 2025 NBA draft, the Utah Jazz opted to select Ace Bailey, a forward from Rutgers who is regarded as one of the most promising yet enigmatic talents in this year’s lineup.
After the Jazz secured him with the fifth overall selection, Austin Ainge, the president of basketball operations for Utah, shared with ESPN, “We really like what he brings to our team and believe he fits perfectly within our program.”
Reflecting on the moment, Bailey admitted he had “no idea” of the Jazz’s interest in him. According to sources, Utah wasn’t even on his radar of preferred teams leading up to the draft.
Despite the unexpected turn, Bailey expressed confidence in his potential to connect with his new teammates. “I think it’s going to involve a lot of hard work when I arrive. I thrive in an environment where I can push myself and my teammates to excel. I aim to step up as a leader, even at my young age,” he stated.
In addition to Bailey, the Jazz also welcomed Florida standout Walter Clayton Jr., who was initially picked by the Washington Wizards at 18 but was traded to Utah in exchange for picks 21 and 43, alongside second-round selections for 2031 and 2032.
Leading up to the draft, Bailey’s strategy had sparked significant curiosity. He was widely projected to be a top-three pick and entered draft night ranked third on ESPN’s Top 100 prospects list. Yet, remarkably, he hadn’t participated in any pre-draft workouts with NBA teams, which led to speculation that he had a preferred destination outside the top five, causing his stock to drop.
Throughout the season, Bailey was a topic of intense discussion among NBA franchises. Standing at 6-foot-9 and showcasing impressive shooting skills, he embodies the desirable profile of a big wing, a vital asset in today’s league. However, his efficiency has been called into question, and he has ample opportunity to develop his ball-handling and passing skills.
Washington appeared to be a fitting option for Bailey, especially considering their rebuilding phase and need for a standout player capable of becoming a leading scorer. Yet, the Jazz, who finished last season with the league’s worst record at 17-65, were undeterred by the lack of a pre-draft workout and committed to selecting Bailey.
With a coaching staff led by Will Hardy—one of the league’s top coaches, who recently signed a long-term deal—Bailey will have the environment necessary to flourish. He expressed relief at having completed the draft process, stating, “I’m eager to hit the court again. It’s been an incredible journey, full of hard work and preparation for this next chapter in my career.”
