The Indiana Fever have decided to part ways with guard/forward DeWanna Bonner, who was a significant addition during the offseason. This decision comes after Bonner missed five games, attributed to personal reasons.
In a statement, Bonner expressed gratitude towards the Fever organization for the opportunity to be part of their roster. However, she acknowledged that the fit with the team was not right. “I want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the Fever franchise,” Bonner mentioned. Her time with the Fever was marked by challenges, as she played only three games in which she averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.
Now at 37, Bonner is contemplating her future in the sport, with retirement being a possibility. The waiver allows Bonner to seek opportunities with other teams this season, as she must go through a 48-hour claim period. Rumor has it that Phoenix, where she began her career, is among her top choices for a new team.
In Bonner’s absence, the Fever have signed guard Aari McDonald, who previously played under an injury hardship contract. McDonald expressed enthusiasm about returning to the Fever, stating, “I’m so excited to rejoin the Fever. Although my time with the team was brief, it immediately felt like the place to be.” Fever general manager Amber Cox also praised McDonald for her skills and fit within the team’s vision.
