James Harden has opted out of his $36.3 million player option and is gearing up to re-sign with the LA Clippers, securing a lucrative two-year contract worth $81.5 million, according to reports from ESPN on Sunday.
The contract includes a player option for the second year and offers partial guarantees, which provides both sides with some flexibility. This deal comes after Harden’s impressive performance, which saw him average 22.8 points, 8.7 assists, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. He also led the NBA with a remarkable 129 step-back 3-pointers.
With this agreement, the Clippers not only retain Harden but also keep the door open to enhance their roster with the $14.1 million non-tax mid-level exception. The partnership between Harden and Kawhi Leonard is set to be pivotal for the upcoming season, as both stars align on their timelines with Leonard having two years left on his contract.
Clippers president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank, emphasized Harden’s importance to the team, stating, “He’s our No. 1 priority. We’re super hopeful that James is here, and he’s here for a long time.” This sentiment reflects the franchise’s commitment to building a competitive team.
In his second season in LA, Harden played a critical role in the Clippers achieving 50 wins, surpassing initial expectations despite Leonard’s injury struggles and George’s departure. His leadership was instrumental in setting the tone within the locker room, and he played 79 games, marking his highest since the 2016-17 season. Notably, he became the only player last season to reach over 1,500 points, 500 assists, 100 steals, and 50 blocks.
This new contract not only rewards Harden for his contributions but also positions the Clippers strategically for future success. Maintaining star players like Harden and Leonard could be key in their pursuit of a championship, especially as they navigate a competitive Western Conference.
