As Portugal gears up for their Women’s Euros showdown against Spain, fans are uniting in a solemn march to commemorate Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away on Thursday morning. The Liverpool forward, alongside his brother André Silva, lost their lives in a car accident near Zamora, Spain.
The funeral service for the brothers is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. local time in Gondomar, their hometown. This poignant event will unfold at the Matriz de Gondomar church, located around 33 kilometers from Porto. A wake is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m., where family and close friends have gathered to pay their respects. Many were seen embracing and shedding tears before entering the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme, where the funeral will occur.
Eyewitnesses reported that the hearses carrying the brothers’ bodies arrived just before midnight, greeted by applause from local residents. The investigation into the crash continues, with Spain’s Guardia Civil indicating that a blown tire during overtaking may have contributed to the tragedy. A government official noted that the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, with both players inside when the accident occurred.
Recently, Jota had undergone minor lung surgery and was advised to drive rather than fly. According to physiotherapist Miguel Gonçalves, Jota’s condition had improved significantly post-surgery, and he was optimistic about his recovery. Jota’s agent, Jorge Mendes, arrived in Zamora to support the grieving family, expressing his disbelief and sorrow at the loss of two remarkable individuals.
In remembrance, supporters have been placing flowers outside Anfield, honoring Diogo Jota’s legacy. Additionally, Penafiel, the Portuguese second division club where Silva played, has announced a day of mourning and plans to pay tribute at upcoming events.
The untimely deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva have sent shockwaves through the football community. Their passion and dedication will be remembered, but this tragedy also raises questions about road safety and the importance of safe travel following medical procedures.
