The Houston Rockets have made headlines by trading Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards, landing two second-round draft picks in return, as reported by ESPN on Saturday.
Whitmore, who was picked No. 20 in the 2023 NBA draft, struggled to find ample playing time with the Rockets. Now, as he approaches his 21st birthday, this trade offers him a chance to step into a larger role with a Wizards team in the midst of rebuilding. Being a Maryland native, this move also brings him closer to his roots.
The Wizards have been active in the offseason, recently acquiring seasoned players such as guard CJ McCollum and center Kelly Olynyk from the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for guard Jordan Poole and wing Saddiq Bey. They also added Texas guard Tre Johnson with the fifth overall pick in last month’s draft.
Meanwhile, the Rockets are not resting on their laurels, having made a major trade for superstar Kevin Durant, while also bringing in experienced players like Dorian Finney-Smith and Clint Capela during free agency.
Whitmore, standing at 6 feet 7 inches tall, averaged 10.8 points over his two-year stint in Houston. Notably, he scored 0.46 points per touch last season, placing him fourth among players with over 1,000 touches, according to ESPN Research.
