Xabi Alonso has called on Real Madrid stars Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé to enhance their work-rate when not in possession as the team gears up for its final Club World Cup group match against Salzburg.

Having secured four points from their initial two matches—drawing against Al Hilal and defeating Pachuca—Madrid is in a favorable position to advance to the knockout stage. The upcoming clash with Salzburg is set to take place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Focus on Team Defense

Both Vinícius and Mbappé received some criticism last season under Alonso’s predecessor, Carlo Ancelotti, regarding their off-the-ball efforts. Alonso emphasized the importance of collective defending during a news conference on Wednesday, stating, “Every player on the pitch must participate in defense. They need to understand our pressing approach; everyone from Vini to Jude [Bellingham] and Fede [Valverde] must be engaged.”

“The defense must advance; the closer we are as a unit, the more effective we will be. Improvement is necessary, and that includes Vini,” Alonso added.

Raising the Stakes of Competition

Alonso also commended the level of competition at the tournament, noting that South American teams have been performing admirably against their European counterparts. “It’s beneficial for European football to witness such competitive levels from teams we don’t often encounter. Clubs like River Plate and Brazilian teams are quite impressive,” he remarked.

While a potential meeting with Manchester City looms if Real Madrid tops Group H, Alonso dismissed the thought of overlooking Salzburg. “It’s not wise to entertain the idea of losing; that sends a poor message. Our goal is clear: we aim to win,” he stated.

Meanwhile, forward Rodrygo, who remained an unused substitute in the match against Pachuca, has sparked speculation about his future. However, Alonso expressed satisfaction with the Brazil international’s mindset. “He appears enthusiastic and ready. The decision not to play him last time was tactical, but he remains crucial; I expect he will play a significant role in the Club World Cup,” Alonso concluded.
